Edinburgh Mela

Another Mela Local Hero is Bra Bohag. Brilliant secondhand furniture shop with a really gorgeous selection of midcentury pieces and art. The place to go if you want your flat to be a little more Don Draper!

2012 June

This little shop is like a geode. The inside is where the treasure is.  Not that it’s un-attractive on the outside – it simple white façade heralds a modest freshness to that part of Easter Road – but the changing exhibits on the inside demonstrate the real commitment to ‘good things’.

BB is emphatically the place in Edinburghfor this range of furniture.

On the back of this, over the last 18 months our apartment has been almost exclusively furnished with rare and beautiful wares from BB.   To name a few – 4 Hans Wenger dining chairs matched with an extending Danish dining table, 2 Robin Day chairs, an original Bra Bohag sideboard, a unique classic re-upholstered Danish day-bed and an exquisite 50’s cadenza designed for Heals.

On opening the showroom door the sniff of polish and the sparkle of rich timber patinas on the furniture is a welcome stimulant.  In this time of economic reduction and constraint it’s a clear signal as to what BB stands for: a core belief in quality mid-century furniture at very reasonable prices.  I hope BB will be there for a long time and continue to fructify its ambitious name . . .

The List -Independent Shopping Guide
One of the few furniture shops in Edinburgh that has innovation, style and quality at more than reasonable prices. Unique – one of Edinburgh’s best kept secrets that won’t stay that way for long. Anyone with an eye for great 50′s/60′s pieces should be knocking on their door.

The Guardian Top Ten Best Vintage Shops in Edinburgh
This secondhand furniture store kits its Leith neighbours out with G-Plan sideboards, Ercol chairs and the occasional taxidermied duck. It’s a good find if you’re looking for offbeat pieces, particularly if you like mid-20th century furniture or homewares with a tasteful retro flourish. Most of the pieces are sourced from the UK, but there’s a strong Scandinavian flavour too. Swedish kettles and ceramics from the 60s sit next to Danish-designed lamps and glassware, and although some of the rarer, one-off pieces of furniture edge towards four figures, many smaller homeware items will give you back change from £20.

A wee gem of a shop for all things to do with the home and for people who like something you won’t see anywhere else. Without doubt the best retro shop in Scotland, there is always something new to see, if only I had a bigger flat!
